If you've never seen a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner before, it's completely normal to feel uncertain about what the appointment will involve. Many patients arrive wondering if they'll be judged, if someone will immediately put them on medication, or if they'll have to rehash painful memories in detail. The reality is much more straightforward — and much less intimidating.

Here's exactly what happens during your first appointment at Mindful Methods.

Before You Arrive

Because Mindful Methods is a telehealth practice, your appointment takes place from the comfort of your own home via a secure video link at doxy.me/alex. No download is required — just a device with a camera and a stable internet connection.

Prior to your appointment, you'll complete intake forms through our patient portal. These ask about your current symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, current medications, and what's bringing you in. The more detail you provide, the more productive your first session will be — but there are no wrong answers.

The First 60 Minutes

Your initial evaluation is scheduled for 60 minutes. This is significantly longer than follow-up appointments, and for good reason — it's your provider's chance to understand who you are, not just what you're experiencing.

Think of it less like a clinical interrogation and more like a structured conversation. You're not being evaluated for judgment — you're being understood so that your care can actually fit your life.

During the evaluation, your provider will cover:

Will I Be Put on Medication Right Away?

Not necessarily. Medication is discussed collaboratively and never prescribed without your understanding and consent. In some cases, a prescription may be appropriate at the first visit. In others, your provider may want to gather more information, monitor symptoms, or explore therapy first.

Every treatment plan is individualized. There is no one-size-fits-all approach at Mindful Methods.

By the End of the Appointment

You'll leave your first appointment with clarity. That means a working diagnosis (or a clear plan to arrive at one), an initial treatment plan, and a follow-up appointment scheduled. You'll know exactly what the next steps are and why.

Most patients say they felt significantly less anxious by the end of the first session than they did going in. Getting started is often the hardest part.
